Yolanda, the only daughter of Martin Luther King III and Andrea Waters King, has already made a name for herself at the tender age of 14.
Last year in July, the public was taken aback after hearing the impactful speech she gave on voting rights. Her words drew an empowering response from many, who were inspired by her powerful message of tackling social, racial, and economic justice.
In 2021, Yolanda was invited to be a guest on The Kelly Clarkson Show where she discussed furthering the work of her grandfather Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., as well as discussing what it was like growing up in a home with such influential figures as her parents.
She is certainly working hard to inspire others with her passionate stance on representation and justice.
People in the streets to honor MLK
Around 2000 people came out on the streets on Monday to march for MLK’s cause of civil rights. All the teenagers, toddlers, and their parents were celebrating on the streets of Sacramento on the occasion of the 42nd annual March of Dreams.
The crowd raised their fists to express solidarity as they walked. The march started at Sacramento City College and ended there as well, hence called ‘Love Loop’ by MLK 365 founder Sam Starks.
The marchers carried multiple slogans and banners that had the king’s face on them surrounded with American flags. Most of the signs read ‘Let Freedom Ring’.
Numerous issues were addressed in the march from people. The issues included voting rights, stopping racism against Asians, and climate change. Land Park residents supported the crowd of marchers with their cheers on the march’s return from a break because of covid-19.
Who is Martin Luther King Jr?
Martin Luther Jr. was named Michael Luther initially but later changed his name to Martin. The king was born on January 15, 1929. His father has been serving as pastor of the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta from 1931 till the present.
Martin Luther completed his high school in Segregated schools in Georgia. He graduated at the age of 15. He also has a degree in B.A from Morehouse college that he obtained in 1948.
King met the love of his life, Coretta Scott, at Boston University while he was enrolled as an undergrad. King and Coretta Scott have two sons and two daughters.
The king was selected as the president of the Christian Leadership Conference. The aim of this conference was to work for the civil rights movement. King made a lot of efforts for the cause of civil rights in his 11-year period from 1957 to 1968.
Martin Luther Jr. is the youngest person in history to be awarded a Nobel prize. Upon hearing the news of being nominated for the Nobel prize, the king decided to donate the prize money of $54,123 for the advancement of the civil rights movement.
In 1968, the king was assassinated on his balcony in Memphis, Tennessee, when he was about to participate in a protest march for the garbage workers of the city.
