Miles Hoffman Obituary, Death – With heavy hearts, we bid a fond farewell to Miles Frederick Hoffman, a legendary personality in the area of classical music criticism. On August 18, our darling Miles, a cherished figure and inspiration to the South Carolina Public Radio community, went away after a valiant three-and-a-half-year battle with leukemia.
His legacy is proof of a life well spent, and his passing has left a vacuum that cannot be filled. More than just a colleague, Miles, also known as Mike, was a trusted confidant, a close friend, and a comrade who had supported him since the beginning of time. We haven’t shared a crib in over 70 years, but the memories we do have of each other are happy, reflective, and replete with Miles’ amazing music. Miles had a multifaceted, keen mind and was an unparalleled polymath.
He was a gifted orator, and the tales he related brought the listeners right into the core of the classical music he so passionately advocated. His remarks had a lovely ring to them. His work as a commentator was more than just a profession; it was a vocation that he pursued with unparalleled zeal, sharing his astute insights and kindling an enthusiasm for the great works that defined historical periods.
Miles was a committed athlete, linguist, writer, humorist, and teacher outside of the media. He was a Renaissance man who delighted everyone who had the good fortune to meet him with his wide range of interests. His impact was enormous and extended beyond the music industry to all facets of human existence. In essence, Miles was a phenomenal musician who was a virtuoso in both thought and action. His live performances, interpretations, and compositions all revealed a soul inextricably linked to the language of music.
We have songs from the symphony of his life that will reverberate in our hearts for a very long time. We are expressing our love and condolences to his lovely wife Susan and his children, Eva and Jillian, during this terrible time as we grieve the loss of this extraordinary guy. Miles’s family’s resiliency and support throughout his courageous battle were evidence of the strong familial bonds that influenced his life.
