The Avon Lake Fire Department has announced that the search for a missing kayaker on Lake Erie has been suspended.
The search for a man who went missing while kayaking on Lake Erie on Saturday was suspended after authorities removed surface-level resources from the water due to lake conditions and darkness, leaving air support to continue searching.
On Saturday, Sheffield Lake Fire Department (SLFD), Lorain County Water Rescue Team (LCWRT), and the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) received a call about a man who couldn’t get back into his kayak after falling out.
‘After extensive search efforts, #USCG air and water assets have suspended the search for a missing kayaker near Sheffield Lake, OH, this evening, pending further developments,’ USCG Great Lakes tweeted.
The Coast Guard Station Cleveland Harbor began its search for a missing man on Saturday afternoon.
The two kayakers who were with the man when he went missing reported him missing at 3:30 p.m.
The activists were caught in a severe storm, and the Coast Guard was called to assist.
“I didn’t necessarily want to see myself in a position where I would need to work with the coast guard,” he said.
He was outside of his Sheffield Lake apartment by Lake Erie when he saw two women in small recreational kayaks and a man in a tandem kayak struggling against the high wind.
Stepic distinctly remembers the day he witnessed three kayakers fighting against strong winds. He observed as two women reached safety, but one man was unfortunately blown away from shore.
“I feel horrible because this lady watched her husband disappear in front of her eyes. And none of us know what happened to him from the point he capsized because we lost sight,” he said.
Coast Guard members searched by helicopter and watercraft around Cleveland and Detroit until 10 pm on Saturday.
The next day, the Sheffield Lake Fire Department was joined by Sheffield Village Fire, Avon Lake Fire, and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources in their efforts.
However, even after more than 24 hours had passed since the kayaker’s disappearance, there were still no signs of them.
Emergency crews are requesting that everyone stay vigilant and report any potential sightings of the kayaker who went missing in Sheffield Lake, Bay Village and the vicinity.
The individual is believed to have been paddling a dark green tandem kayak and wearing a lime green life vest, along with a gray shirt and shorts.
